Crystal Cave Reopens in Springfield after 10-Year Hiatus
Opened in 1893, Crystal Cave is located just north of Springfield, Missouri. After being for sale for quite some time, the new owners have reopened the local attraction with a few added features. Visitors can now shop in the gift shop, play a round of mini golf, or enjoy a trackless train ride filled with historic facts and sightseeing around the 72-acre property. Crystal Cave now also offers panning for gemstones or fossils starting at only $8.
Crystal Cave was originally owned and operated by members of the Mann family from its opening in 1893 until 1969, starting with Alfred Mann and later Alfred’s three daughters. Loyd and Edith Richardson were the latest owners, operating the cave until Loyd’s death in 2014. Since 2014, Crystal Cave has remained closed to the public until March 23rd, 2022 when it was reopened by the Dole family.
While I haven’t visited Crystal Cave since well before it closed, I have fond memories of visiting as a kid and I am excited to return. The 39 minute tour takes visitors through winding passages, requiring much more athleticism than other local cave tours.
