Selecting my Mexican Geode at the Springfield Rock Show 2019

Springfield’s Rock, Gem, and Mineral Show 2019

Last weekend, October 19th and 20th, Dan & I explored the Springfield Rock Show. Hosted at the Expo Center, it was only a short walk from my office. Unfortunately for me, that meant that I visited three times over the weekend.

This show was excellent, showcasing rocks, gems, minerals, and fossils from 25 vendors from across the country. I was excited to see a few of my favorite vendors that I ran into at the Osage Beach Show and the Mozarkite Society Show earlier this year.

Exploring the Show

We started the weekend with a quick walk-through, talking to some vendors and picking out a few things I would keep an eye on. I was thrilled to see that the Geode Hunters were in attendance again. They offer a pretty good variety of geodes. This show they had Keokuk Geodes, Mexican Coconuts, and Trancas Geodes in stock. I have had my eye on Mexican Coconuts for quite some time now and I was excited to add one to my collection.

CJL was one of the standout vendors at the Mozarkite show in Lincoln earlier this year. They recently purchased a large private collection that included some truly stunning specimens.

Another favorite was Big Rock Candy Mountain from Hot Springs, Arkansas. They were showcasing some exceptional specimens. I absolutely loved their quartz clusters

Finding Some Traysure

With my hunt nearly come to an end, I selected a Mexican Coconut to have cracked. The Geode Hunters always come prepared with a large soil pipe cutter. This time around, they had a young helper who revealed my geode to me. I was stunned, frankly. Inside my Coconut was a brilliant purple amethyst with a large hunk of smokey quartz. I was thrilled!

With my treasure in tow, we returned to The Rock Pile table from West Plains, MO. This dealer was also a favorite of ours from the Osage Beach Rock Show, where we had picked up some excellent quartz. At the Springfield Rock Show, we bought a stunning example of Dogstooth Calcite from Fletcher Lead Mine.

Satisfied with our purchases, Dan and I headed out to the Steak ‘n’ Shake on National, a personal favorite for a quick bite.
