Coon Creek Science Center
- Profile
Run by the Pink Palace Family of Museums, Coon Creek Science Center is located in McNairy County, Tennessee.
70 Million years ago, the water of the Gulf of Mexico receded and left behind a treasure trove of marine fossils in this area of Tennessee. The Fossils in Coon Creek have been studied for one hundred and fifty years and continue to provide insights to the history of this area.
Visit the Coon Creek Science Center by making a reservation and explore the life that once thrived in the thumb-print shaped bay previously filled by the Gulf of Mexico on several occasions.
While your need for dinosaur fossils may not be filled at Coon Creek quite yet, they have found two Mosasaurs, large aquatic lizards that could reach lengths of up to 45 feet. These aquatic behemoths topped the food chain in the Coon Creek area.
This stunning site has been named on of the country’s top fossil sites. Coon Creek fossils are generally found in their original state and encompass over 600 different species.
Thanks to the Coon Creek Science Center, the Memphis Museum System is able to engage in education, conservation, management, and research at a truly unique fossil site. They offer excellent programming that engages children and adults in the scientific process.
