Explore the Opal Mines of Tequisquiapan on a four hour tour with Travel and Tourism based in Tequisquiapan. This four hour tour takes you to the community of La Trinidad. You will travel up a bumpy, winding path to the opal mine “El Redentor” in 4×4 vehicles. This is an active mine and miners work daily to extract opal from the large rock faces, then shape and polish them into beautiful handmade jewelry.
You will be able to collect your own opal stones or purchase polished opals at the workshop at an excellent price. While many of the miners work in the sun, making it easier to spot the shine of the opals, the tour takes you into small caves to hunt, keeping you out of the heat of the day. This tour is known for its excellent guides who describe the rich history of opal mining in the area.
The Opal Mine Tour costs 450 pesos for adults, approximately $23 USD and 300 peses for Children from 4 to 12, approzimately $15 USD.
Travel and Tourism generally only hosts tours for parties of 4, so please plan ahead and contact them, especially if you are traveling alone or as a couple.
