Our first meeting of the Staten Island Geological Society Inc. will take place on Friday, October 9 at 7:30 pm. Due to COVID-19, we can no longer meet in our regular meting place, therefore we will have our first Zoom meeting at this time. The Society will have a presentation by Prof. Steve Okulewicz, from the Department of Geology, Environment & Sustainability at Hofstra University. His PowerPoint presentation will cover such topics as what is a precious vs a semi-precious gemstone, what distinguishes a mineral from a gemstone, and how gems are identified. The lecture will begin at 8:00 pm.
In order to participate in the November meeting you MUST be a paid-up bona-fide member of the Staten Island Geological Society to receive the Zoom address and our monthly newsletter. Annual dues are: adults: $25; young adults, ages 19-21 years: $5.00; youngsters 18 years or younger: free. The only eligibility requirement is a sincere interest in minerals and Earth Sciences. It also offers the opportunity for good fellowship with others who share similar interests.
