Prof. Steve Okulewicz from Hofstra University’s Department of Geology and Environmental Sustainability will present “Iceland: Land of Fire”
There are 130 volcanic mountains dotting the landscape within 32 volcanic systems, most of which are dormant or extinct. Iceland has 30 active volcanoes with 207 eruptive events since human settlement of Iceland began in 900 CE. Discover why these numerous and massive piles of volcanic material exist in Iceland, how and why they erupt, and examine the problems they present to residents, air traffic, and global weather. Icelandic basalt and zeolites will also be displayed.
